Clara
Ed.D. Program in Instructional Leadership
Megee Fenn Scholar
We are proud to award Clara the Magee Fenn Scholarship. Magee was a much-admired YUWO member who was eager to help women get a jumpstart back into their education. Her generosity made possible a continuing legacy of YUWO scholars.
More About Clara
Clara’s educational journey reflects both determination and perseverance. She made the intentional decision to delay earning her doctoral degree while working full-time as a teacher, paying back student loans, and raising a family.
This fall, Clara will begin her Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership on a part-time basis while continuing to work as a Spanish language teacher. She chose to begin her doctoral studies at the same time that her youngest child will start preschool. Clara’s story is a powerful example of resilience, patience, and planning.
Clara brings more than a decade of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and advancing access for international and multicultural students. Her professional experience includes teaching in Connecticut public schools and nearly 15 years of service as an Instructor and Academic Advisor at the Yale University English Language Summer Institute. Those who have worked with Clara consistently highlight her unique ability to combine strong organizational skills with genuine empathy and care for her students. Her work reflects a broad understanding of how to foster student growth by creating supportive environments where students feel empowered to succeed.

Diana
Master’s Program in Environmental Science
YUWO Annual Fund Scholar
As a first-generation college student, Diana imagined that graduating from college in 2020 would create new opportunities for her and her family. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many of those plans.
More About Diana
Fortunately, she eventually had the opportunity to work as an Environmental Protection Specialist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and worked with The Nature Conservancy, first as a volunteer and later as a Community Engagement Associate. She currently works at the Yale Center for Environmental Justice.
Diana’s Connecticut community encouraged her to revisit her forgotten dream of pursuing a graduate degree. She will begin her Master’s this fall, and will study the history of environmental justice at the federal level and the grassroots movements that helped shape federal environmental science, tools, and policy. Her research will examine how foundational environmental justice efforts within the federal government have evolved over time.
Colleagues at The Nature Conservancy described Diana as bringing exceptional initiative, emotional intelligence, and systems thinking to climate resilience initiatives across Connecticut and the Long Island Sound region. Diana frequently took on responsibilities beyond her formal role, earning the trust and respect of colleagues across multiple departments.

Megan
MPH Program in Chronic Disease
YUWO Annual Fund Scholar
As a first-generation eldest daughter, the responsibility for Megan’s education fell solely on her shoulders her entire life. As she navigated the higher education system, she knew that scholarships would be the only way to manage a college education.
More About Megan
In high school, Megan received an award that covered 100% of the University of Florida’s in-state tuition. Between working part-time and other scholarships, she completed a BS in Plant Science at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 2023. To save money for graduate school, Megan has been working at Yale University as a graduate research assistant in the Irwin Laboratory at the School of Public Health.
One of Megan’s references described her work as a graduate assistant, noting that she is an exceptional student guided by a deeply rooted commitment to equity. Her dedication to improving the lives of those in underserved populations is both personal and sustained. Throughout her life she has consistently put this commitment into action with volunteering at food pantries and healthcare settings, and she co-founded an art club providing free resources to students without access to art supplies.
Megan’s six years of experience in scientific research have inspired her plan to help people working on crops to improve nutritional access and economic outcomes for millions of people. She discovered Yale’s MPH program in Chronic Disease as a way to improve important health outcomes on a major population-level scale..
