About YUWO

Yale University Women’s Organization connects the intellectually curious in the Greater New Haven area through educational, cultural, and philanthropic activities that reflect our commitment to creating an open, welcoming organization within the broader Yale community.

Who We Are

New Haven skyline

The Yale University Women’s Organization was established in 1965. It is designed to welcome and serve all women members of the Yale community, including female faculty and staff, wives of faculty and staff, and others affiliated with the university in any way.

Education, recreation, and service have formed the heart of the organization’s structure from its earliest days. Talks by guest speakers such as Robert Penn Warren, Betty Friedan, Lillian Hellman, and James Earl Jones and lecture series by Yale professors in fields ranging from astronomy to literature to economics have been some of the highlights — and hallmarks — of YUWO’s 65+ year history.

YUWO’s Scholarship Program, our only fundraising activity, provides annual awards to women in the Yale Community who are returning to school after interruptions or delays.

The History of YUWO:

One Story, Many Voices

To celebrate Yale University Women’s Organization’s 35th anniversary, an oral history, One Story, Many Voices, was created in 2000-2021. A YUWO committee and a team of Yale student videographers documented the organization’s history beginning with its founding in 1965.

YUWO is an all volunteer organization. Its members are active in running the organization, as board members, program chairs, and supporters of the YUWO Scholarship Program.
