The Fall Lecture Series theme is about exploring the cultures of Latin America through the eyes of those committed to developing knowledge, understanding and support for the people south of our borders through outreach, education, volunteerism and philanthropy.
We hope members will join us for lunch at the cafeteria for continued discussions with our speakers.
October 8: Deborah Proctor, MD, Professor of Medicine, Medical Director IBD Program at Yale Medical School; Founder, Honduras Children’s Project. Dr. Proctor will speak about her experience leading to the development of the Honduras Children’s Project dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by educating one child at a time. Her latest book “Every Child Counts” is now available through Amazon
October 15: Chris Schweitzer, Director, and team members of New Haven/Leon Sister City Project will present us with an overview of the Sister City Project and the work done to promote social justice in the communities of Greater New Haven and Leon, Nicaragua.
October 22: Margherita Tortora, Senior Lector of Spanish at Yale, will speak on her efforts to increase cultural awareness through films and literature. She is the founder and executive director of the Latino and Iberian Film Festival at Yale (LIFFY) sponsored by the Council for Latin American and Iberian Studies at Yale (MacMillan Center).
October 29: Carlos Eire, PhD, Professor, T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale. Dr. Eire will discuss his life as a child in Cuba during the Castro takeover resulting in his being sent to Miami via the Pedro Pan Project with thousands of Cuban children, to be taken in by foster families, and his amazing life’s journey. He received the National Book Award for his work “Waiting for Snow in Havana” which was followed by “Learning to Die in Miami”
The fee for the Fall Series is $65, and members who wish to bring a guest to a specific lecture will pay an additional fee of $10.
